It’s important to be aware of the currency of the country you’re visiting before you go. Mexico’s official currency is the Peso. Whether you’re going to Mexico to chill out on some powder sand beaches, sip a cocktail or explore the history, there’s so much to do in this amazing country, which means you’ll probably need some spending money. Mexican currency comes in 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 Peso notes. It’s good to have a variety of Mexican Pesos, as having larger notes can be handy for excursions, but smaller notes are good when you’re paying for a few drinks. Currency in Mexico is abbreviated by the dollar sign, $, but you might see it printed as MX$ or $MN. Mexican Peso coins come as $1, $2, $5 and $10. These pesos are handy for tips, as it’s customary to tip waiters between 10% and 15%. If you’re looking to experience the authentic side of Mexico, carry some smaller Mexican Peso notes and coins with you and try haggling at the markets. The markets are great places to pick up some complete bargains, from clothes and food to souvenirs and home furnishing. Also, if you’d like your money to go further, it’s best to eat outside of the main tourist areas, as food is cheaper and more authentic.
